The expectation for the sugarcane industry in Thailand is of growth. The OSBC estimates the production of sugarcane for 2013/2014 to reach 110 million tons, which should be converted to 11 million tonnes of sugar. The integration of the Asian market, scheduled for 2015, will provide an opportunity for the country to export more within the block.
According to Prasert Tapaneeyangkul, former secretary of the board, despite the good prospects for the sector in Thailand, the country still needs to increase its agricultural part, improve their productivity and efficiency, as well as the conditions of sugarcane prices paid to producers. Sugarcane production is mostly, about 80%, held by small farmers in the country. “One of the goals should be to strengthen the capacity of producers and give price stability,” he said.
