Technology allows burning of fuels containing up to 65% humidity

São Martinho and Guarani, two of the largest sugar/energy groups in Brazil, have embraced bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) technology for their new high pressure boilers. The equipment is being supplied by HPB-Simisa Energy Systems, LLC located in Sertãozinho, SP, from a project by HPB Engineering and Equipment, LLC, and the Babcock and Wilcox Company (B&W).

Both new units will include this technology, which is designed to burn solid fuels with low pollution emissions. The BFB system has already been consolidated in other industrial segments such as Citrus, Paper and Cellulose and others. For the sugar/energy sector, it is news. A boiler with this type of system is capable of burning any kind of vegetable biomass, such as bagasse, leaves and sugarcane scraps, elephant grass, wood chips, sawdust, charcoal, and other fuels. During the process, vinasse, petroleum coke, tires and residue derived fuels (RDF) can be burned.

Advantages include: greater stability, efficiency and dependability, besides reduced particle emissions such as NOx (nitrogen oxides), CO and SO2, when burned together with biomass and petroleum derivatives and other products which contain lead in their chemical makeup. According to HPB Engineering president Valter José Peruch, although this system has a higher initial installation cost compared to traditional equipment, it pays for itself through its high return rate in approximately three harvests. “From the popularity of BFB around the world, there is no doubt that in a few years, it will be the industry standard,” he notes.

The new boiler at Guarani will be able to operate at a capacity of 150 t/h at a pressure of 67 bar and at 520 ºC to burn sugarcane bagasse with an average humidity of 55%, and at São Martinho, it will function with a production capacity of 300 t/h, at a pressure of 68 bar and 520 ºC too.
