Sugar beet pulp used to produce bioplastic in the U.S.

Scientists have found a way to turn the pulpy by-product of sugar beet into a biodegradable plastic, with properties similar to polystyrene and polypropylene. More than one million tonnes of sugar beet pulp are generated annually by US beet sugar industries. The continued development of the sugar beet pulp plastic could benefit sugar beet growers and beet sugar processors.

The project is being developed by scientists and researchers of USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS).
