Philippines – Sugar output to rise 5% in 2012/13

Sugar production in the Philippines in 2012/13 will lift by 5% from last season, to 2.35 million tonnes, due to improving weather and an increase in the planted area, according to Francisco Varua, President of the Philippine Sugar Millers Association.

High global sugar prices last year prompted farmers to switch from growing crops such as bananas to sugarcane, Varua said, estimating the area under sugarcane cultivation in 2012 at around 420,000 ha, up about 6% on the year.
