Ministry of Food Proposes Decontrol of Sugar Sector


India’s food ministry has proposed to the Government to partially remove its control over the sugar sector, including the obligation on mills to set aside 10% of their output for government-run subsidized sales to the poor.

The proposal also suggests scrapping quarterly allocations of sugar for sale in the domestic market, a mechanism aimed at preventing any sharp rise in prices paid by consumers.
