Iraq has bought 200,000 tonnes of white sugar from Thailand and Algeria, the trade ministry said on Friday.
The purchase comprised of 100,000 tonnes of Thai sugar in a tender for a nominal 50,000 tonnes, which closed on Feb. 4.
The trade ministry did not give a reason why Thai sugar was selected after it was excluded along with Indian origin sugar from the initial tender.
The other 100,000 tonnes, including 50,000 tonnes of Algeria sugar and another 50,000 tonnes from Thailand, was made through direct purchase.
Iraq is the world’s second largest white sugar importer after the United States with an annual consumption estimated in the 2012-2013 period at 795,000 tonnes, according to trade group the International Sugar Organisation (ISO)
