Indonesia Issues Raw Sugar Import Permits for Another 110,000 Tons

Indonesia, the world’s top raw sugar importer, has issued additional import permits for 110,000 tons of the sweetener, an industry ministry official said on Monday.

Indonesia, which last week issued extra raw sugar import permits for 475,000 tons as it looks to meet rising industry demand, will now look to ship a total of 2.85 million tons for 2013, Faiz Achmad, director of food and fishery at the industry ministry told Reuters.

The three new sugar refineries awarded the raw sugar import permits are Berkah Manis Makmur, Andalan Furnindo and Medan Sugar Industry, Achmad added.

Southeast Asia’s largest economy limits imports of raw sugar, which it usually gets from Thailand, Brazil or Australia, to protect local farmers and aid domestic sugarcane mills.
