Brazil: Unica’s Rodrigues sees Centre/South 2013/14 cane crop up at record 585 mln t

Brazil will increase ethanol production in 2013/14 as the cane crop will be larger, sugar prices wilt under a global glut and government policy revives demand for the biofuel, the technical director of sugar industry association Unica told Reuters.

An aggressive renewal of old, less productive fields and expanded cultivated area is expected to boost cane output by about 10% to 585 mln tonnes in 2013/14, which would mark a record in terms of crushing if most or all of it is processed. However, achieving that depends on having weather dry enough to enable a nimble pace of harvesting, Antonio de Padua Rodrigues said.
