Africa has potential as sugar producer, however, it needs to overcome barriers

Despite the African continent has a great number of countries producers of sugar and one of the largest populations (with one the most highest growth rates) in the world, Africa does not play a proportionally important role in the sugar’s international economy. The evaluation made by the senior economist from ISO (International Sugar Organization), Lindsay Jolly, during the 2ndAfrica Sugar Outlook Conference, which took place in Nairobi, Kenya last March.

According to the economist, the sugar industry in the African continent is very diverse. The production systems, size, property structures, market stores vary from country to country. In general, the industry is trying to maintain or improve its competitiveness reducing costs and diversification. “The regional and bilateral agreements have an important role in this search for competitiveness”, he said.
